Let's Play a Game that is "Hard To Get"

by Bhim Pandya (May 2021)

May I call you? I say

Let's Talk, She says

May I call you? I say

Let's Talk, She says

May I call you? I say

I will call you she says

Let's play a game, she thinks...

Hard to get, she thinks...

3 Weeks Later

I haven't heard from you I say

She has seen the message, it says

Hope you are okay, I say

She has seen the message, it says

1 Week Later

I am very busy, she says

She has viewed your story, it says

Hello, I say

She has seen the message, it says

2 Days Later

She has viewed your story, it says

She has visited your profile, it says

She is playing a game, I think

Hard to get, I think

3rd Day

Hope you are doing well, I say

I really like you, I say

4th Day

Good morning, I say

Good evening, I say

I will do this for some, time I think

She has seen the message, it says

7th Day:

I am busy for the next couple of days, she says

She is online all day

8th Day:

She is online all day

9th Day:

She is online all day

One month later:

Hi, She says

How are you? She says

I see the message...

Good morning, She says

Good evening, She says

How was your day? She says

I see the message...

She does this for some time

I see the messages...

8 Weeks Pass:

Why are you not responding to me? She says

Have you lost interest? She says

I think we are over...? She says

I win, I say

You got me, She says

Let's play again, I say

Let's be together, She says

May I call you? I say

Let's Talk, She says.

This poem attempts to capture the idea of a modern romantic game that some of us may have played at some point known as "Hard to Get".  It is mainly played using text and other social media forums (even more common with the pandemic). It is a frustrating game.

I must admit that the event in the poem is based on a true story which has been taking place in the real world, since the past couple of weeks.

The real life individual at this stage has reached a point of realization that they are in fact already in the game lobby and that the game would commence in a couple of days.

The ending of the story shows how I as the writer of the poem feel the ending should be.  Not going to name any names, not even mine (jokes its not about me or maybe it is?).

I must also admit that the idea of gaming also inspired the writing of this poem and cannot help myself but say what I am about to say. Why? Because I can and because I think it possesses some level of depth.

My message:

To the gamers out there trying to get themselves into the game of 'romance', 'love', 'relationships', or are already in one; remember to use network lag to your advantage!
